Reporting Animal Bites

Animal Control officers investigate bite incidents. Whether you are a victim or an owner of a pet who as bitten someone, please contact LaSalle County Animal Control to report the incident at (815)434-8661, or after hours to emergency services at (815)433-2161 Option 6. A representative from Animal Control will contact you.

If you have been bitten by a dog or cat, please seek medical attention.

Contact the animal control officer, police, or sheriff’s department.

The police, sheriff, or animal control will contact the owner and issue the animal observation order.

LaSalle Animal Control will receive a copy and contact the owner to verify the terms of the order.

If the dog or cat is vaccinated, the owner can keep the animal home for the 10 day observation period, but it MUST be confined. It should not be outside by itself. If outside it must be on a leash. Also, in the home it must be confined from any guests during the 10 day observation period.

If the animal has no proof of rabies vaccination, the animal will be held in a confinement location for 10 days and the owner will be responsible for the associated boarding fees.

On the 10th day the animal will need to be taken to the veterinarian office to be evaluated. The owner must bring in the observation form, as the veterinarian will need to sign and send the form to LaSalle County Animal Control Department.

The owner CANNOT give away the animal or put it to sleep during the 10 day period.

No rabies vaccination should be given to the animal until the 10 day confinement is over.

If the animal is a stray, please contact LaSalle County Animal Control if in an unincorporated area or your local Law Enforcement in a municipality. The animal will need to be trapped, so it can be observed for the required 10 day period.
